In 1949 the organizational meeting of the Hand Weavers Guild was held at Dixon House in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, and membership fees were set at $1.00 per year. The guild met on an irregular basis until May 1952 and then disbanded. In February, 1954 the group was revived with Miss Ethel Smedmor as its first president.
In 1969 the name was changed to the Peterborough Handweavers and Spinners Guild. Today there are over 25 members and several honorary members. Skills range from weavers and spinners to felters, knitters, dyers and basket makers.
The group meets on the 3rd Monday of each month at the Kawartha Artists Gallery, 729 Park Street South. Doors open at 7:00 pm and meetings begin at 7:30 pm. Programs take place at each meeting and vary from members giving talks on special subjects of their expertise to guest speakers or special occasion projects. Workshops are occasionally run on weekdays or weekends.
There are regular meetings each month with a spinning group and a weave-study group. The Guild also participates in community activities including displays at the Peterborough Library and at Hutchinson House. Every November the Guild takes part in the annual craft show Autumn Treasures.
The Guild maintains an extensive library and carries current magazine publications including Handwoven, Spin-Off and Fibre Focus. As well, weaving and spinning equipment is available to rent, including a 100" floor loom for those larger projects
